About the Item
A romantic and moving work by on of America's top Coastal painters of the 19th century! A large-scale and impressive work with lovely light. This painting can hold a large spot. It is in a classic 19th century marine style frame, 22 Karat gold. The size of the canvas inside the frame is 30.25 x 50.25.
Bricher sketched and painted along the New England coast, depicting long stretches of shore under varying skies of Massachusetts and Maine. Under a Divided Sky is a departure from his often calm or fair views. Bricher focused upon an old wreck that is a moving and poetic reminder of man’s vulnerability in relation to the vicissitudes of the sea. To heighten this feeling, Bricher has imparted a contrast to the sky. It is either a clearing as a storm departs, which would be a metaphor for hope or the storm is impending, which parallels the tragedy at hand.
Bricher was a second-generation Hudson River painter but as his career progressed he became engrossed with depictions of the coast as opposed to the landscapes he often did in the 1860’s and early 1870’s. The artists that had the greatest influence on him were Martin Johnson Heade, Fitz Hugh Lane and John F. Kensett. His coastal views are what most people know him for and today he and William Trost Richards are two of our most recognized coastal marine painters of the late nineteenth century.
It is possible that this painting was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1885 with the title The Old Wreck on the Beach, Narragansett. The large format of Under a Divided Sky indicates it may have been an exhibition piece.

George Inness, one of America's foremost landscape painters of the late nineteenth century, was born in 1825 near Newburgh, New York. He spent most of his childhood in Newark, New Jersey. He was apprenticed to an engraving firm until 1843, when he studied art in New York with Regis Gignoux, a landscape painter from whom he learned the classical styles and techniques of the Old Masters. In 1851, sponsored by a patron, Inness made a fifteen-month trip to Italy. In 1853 he traveled to France, where he discovered Barbizon landscape painting, leading him to adopt a style that used looser, sketchier brushwork and more open compositions, emphasizing the expressive qualities of nature. The big, open blue sky is stacked with the colors of the sunset against the horizon, calling to mind a Rothko or the other great color field painters who achieve mood and depth from singular color. About the work: Painter Jane Bloodgood-Abrams has become one of the area’s most celebrated artists, gracing viewers with her compositions of sky, river, and earth. Being less concerned with documenting specific scenes, Bloodgood-Abrams is focused on capturing nature’s essence, “the deeply profound moments, where there is a connection to a vital energy.” Her process begins with being in nature, where she allows the emotional energy of the landscape to filter through her psyche. The memory is then translated onto canvas after being worked over a period of time with layers of paint that is applied, wiped away, and reworked. The result is a radiantly dramatic remembrance of Bloodgood-Abram’s encounter with “something beyond everyday life”.
